Jason Momoa Set For Sony’s Feature Take Of ‘Helldivers’ Video Game From Justin Lin; Fall 2027 Release Set
Jason Momoa will star in PlayStation Productions and Sony Pictures’ film adaptation of Helldivers, based on Arrowhead Game Studios’ video game franchise. Justin Lin will helm and the pic will hit theaters on Nov. 10, 2027.
The game debuted in 2015 and the sequel, Helldivers 2, sold more than 12 million units across PS5 and PC in the first four months after its launch in 2024. The game recently expanded to Xbox and continues to perform. Helldivers 2‘s story centers around an elite unit of soldiers—known as Helldivers— who must battle alien creatures threatening to destroy the fictional planet of Super Earth.
Hutch Parker, PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash, and Lin, through his Perfect Storm Entertainment, are producing.
Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions previously worked together on Uncharted, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, which earned $407 million globally and is one of the top ten highest grossing video game adaptation globally; Peacock’s hit series, Twisted Metal; and the award winning and critically acclaimed series The Last of Us for HBO.
It was recently revealed that Momoa will be playing intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, in theaters on June 26, in what is a very busy year for the leading action star. Currently, he stars opposite Dave Bautista in Amazon MGM Studios’ The Wrecking Crew on Prime Video. On May 1, Momoa stars opposite Ryan Reynolds in Warner Bros/Legendary’s hybrid animated movie Animal Friends. He’s also taking on the iconic role of Blanka in Legendary/Paramount’s Street Fighter on Oct. 16 and returns as Duncan Idaho in Warner Bros/Legendary’s Dune: Part Three on Dec. 18.
Momoa previously played Aquaman in Warner Bros’ DC universe across two movies directed by James Wan. He starred in Fast X as Dante which was written and produced by Lin. Last year, Momoa starred in Warner Bros/Legendary’s near $1 billion grossing A Minecraft Movie which was arguably the first movie to wake up the 2025 global box office. He was known for portraying Khal Drogo on HBO’s Games of Thrones.
He most recently starred and co-created Apple TV+ limited series Chief Of War.
Currently, Helldivers is the only major studio wide release on Nov. 10.
