Broadway’s ‘The Queen Of Versailles’ To Close Even Earlier Than Expected Due To “Harsh Economic Realities”
The Queen of Versailles, the new and soon-to-close Broadway musical starring Kristin Chenoweth and F. Murray Abraham, will close its doors even earlier than previously announced: Producers informed the cast today that rather than close January 4, 2026, the show will play its final performance on Sunday, December 21.
“Unfortunately, the harsh economic realities of new Broadway musicals in a post-Covid landscape have caught up with us,” the note from producers, obtained by Deadline, states in part. “The industry as a whole is no longer seeing the audience behaviors we’ve relied on to shape our strategies for decades. This has led us to the painful decision to move our closing earlier, to Sunday, December 21st.”
The producing team, led by Bill Damaschke, Seaview, Sonia Friedman and Chenoweth, did not issue a formal press announcement regarding the new closing date, but said in the memo to cast, that the earlier exit would be reflected in marketing materials and the official website.
A company Zoom meeting with cast and producers is scheduled for todayat 4pm ET. “While attendance is not mandatory, we strongly encourage everyone to join,” the producers write.

“QoV Cast-
“While difficult, the decision to announce that our show would close on January 4th was made strategically, with the goal of creating a limited opportunity to see the production. Condensing inventory and equipping the marketing team with limited-engagement messaging were essential steps in our effort to improve wraps.
“This move was a significant bet—one that has historically helped boost sales, especially heading into the holiday weeks. Unfortunately, the harsh economic realities of new Broadway musicals in a post-Covid landscape have caught up with us. The industry as a whole is no longer seeing the audience behaviors we’ve relied on to shape our strategies for decades. This has led us to the painful decision to move our closing earlier, to Sunday, December 21st.
“We will not be issuing an official press release and instead, flip all marketing assets incorporating our new closing date. This won’t alleviate the press picking up this news, which the production will confirm. This will happen at 2:30pm EST today.
“We recognize that this news will be shocking, and that it will prompt many questions and concerns. We want to address those questions and provide you with full context. To that end, we will be scheduling a company Zoom today, December 9 at 4pm EST. While attendance is not mandatory, we strongly encourage everyone to join.
“We have built an extraordinary family throughout this journey—from Boston to Broadway—and we remain committed to doing all we can to support and preserve that family. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us privately with any questions or needs.
“We look forward to speaking with you all this afternoon
“Best, Bill, Greg, Anna & Tony”
