‘A Man On The Inside’ Renewed For Season 3 By Netflix
EXCLUSIVE: Charles Nieuwendyk will keep on sleuthing, now professionally. Netflix has ordered a third season of Mike Schur’s comedy series A Man on the Inside, starring Ted Danson. The renewal comes two and a half months after Season 2 dropped on Nov. 20.
It is is proof that, while Netflix relies heavily on the proverbial algorithm, it does not always base renewal decisions strictly on viewership, especially for comedies, which are generally not as pricey as dramas, making for a more advantageous cost vs. performance ratio even if the latter is not very strong.
In the case of A Man on the Inside, from Universal Television, Netflix is betting on proven creative auspices in Schur and Danson and continuous critical acclaim (92% on Rotten Tomatoes for Season 2 vs. 96% for Season 1) despite smaller viewership.
After a breakout 2024 series debut and quick renewal, Season 2 of A Man on the Inside did not crack Netflix’s weekly Top 10 for English series as it ran into the buzzsaw of Stranger Things‘ final season. (Season 1 spent five weeks in the Top 5 in a less competitive time frame, opening at No.1.)
In Netflix’s What We Watched semi-annual report on July – December 2025 viewership released earlier this month, Season 2 of A Man on the Inside ranked No. 131 with 9.8M views following its Nov. 20 premiere. For comparison, Season 1 was No. 30 for July-Dec. 2024 with 21.6M views over a virtually identical window having released on Nov. 21, 2024. That’s a drop of 55%. Audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes also has slipped from 90% for Season 1 to 69% for Season 2.
However, audiences also have continued to discover or rewatch the comedy, with Season 1 adding another 5.9M views in the second half of 2025. According to Netflix, the combined delivery of both seasons through the end of 2025 is 45M+.
Conversations about a third season had been ongoing between Netflix and Universal TV, leading to the renewal, which, like Season 2, was announced with Charles (Danson) holding a newspaper, a nod to how the show began.
“We are absolutely thrilled to partner with Netflix on another season of A Man on the Inside,” creator/ executive producer Michael Schur said. “It’s a true joy to work with this entire team, most especially the handsome, erudite, and monstrously talented Ted Danson, a true American treasure whose contract stipulates exactly what adjectives I am allowed to use while describing him in press releases.”
In Season 2, eager to take on another big undercover case, Charles Nieuwendyk (Danson) gets his chance when a mysterious blackmailer targets Wheeler College president Jack Berenger (Max Greenfield), who enlists Charles to go undercover as a professor.
By the end of the season, as he cracks the case, Charles also gets his PI license.
The Season 2 cast also includes Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Lilah Richcreek Estrada, Stephanie Beatriz, Gary Cole, Michaela Conlin, Lisa Gilroy, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Madison Hu, Sam Huntington, Jason Mantzoukas, Constance Marie, Linda Park, Mary Steenburgen, David Strathairn and Jill Talley.
A Man on the Inside, based on the documentary The Mole Agent, is executive produced by Schur (Fremulon), Morgan Sackett, David Miner (3 Arts Entertainment), Maite Alberdi and Marcela Santibañez (Micromundo Producciones), Julie Goldman and Christopher Clements (Motto Pictures). Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, is the studio.
